3rd project: 2page spread Magazine Article

Step 1:
For my magazine Article, I invented a health magazine (Medline) because I really wanted to write on something related to health. The focus for this was on "Tips for Healthy Living".

I read and re-modified an article from Personal excellence. It's a very long article, so I picked out just some portions which could fit into my 2page spread, without over-crowding it. The original title is : 45 Tips To Live a Healthier Life , and the website is:   http://personalexcellence.co/blog/healthy-living/

Step 2:
An example of Alexey Brodovitch's works that inspired me was the following:

These works show an affinity for white space (Brodovitch's style) and texts that model the shape of the image such that the image and the text seem to be one, passing across the same emphasized message. This model also gives the article a sort of musical feeling in the flow of text and picture.
In addition to this, I also made use of the colour red (another of his techniques), to emphasize important points in the texts.

Step 3:
Below is my design, on a 2 page spread sheet.

I begun by dividing my lay-out in the middle using the illustrator reader, so that I could design directly on 2pages (each 8inchx11inch). Then I pasted my pictures. The background of some of the pictures were removed on Photoshop. Next, I added my text for each picture. Basically, I tried to make the text either take the shape, or part of the shape of the items in the pictures they were talking about, and used red colours to indicate the main points. Lastly, I added my page numbers at the top and the magazine title+Edition at the bottom end

Project 2: Environmental Awareness Poster

 1. This poster is aimed at promoting Environmental Awareness especially by preserving nature(especially trees) and use of renewable energy (in this case the sun). It gives a hint of what benefits come from the sun, which stands to represent all renewable energy; as well as the benefits of going green (represented by the tree), and practicing good waste management skills (smiling symbol of waste management at the center of the tree). Thus, the poster gives the audience a glimpse of the benefits of engaging in this venture: 'Let's go Green!'. The target audience is students, but open to all lovers of the environment. It will be posted in Vanier college as well as any Environmental seminars in Montreal, proceeding this seminar.

2. I based my design on Constructivist design , and was inspired by works of some modern day artists'  like Tyler Howsare (Picture i.) who incorporated past designs with modern ideas. I was also inspired by an Environmental Poster image on Dreamstime ( Picture ii.).

Collage; Henri Matisse

This art is a type of collage known as Decoupage and defined as craft.  It is the made by placing a picture onto an object for decoration. Decoupage usually involve adding multiple copies of the same image, cut and layered to add apparent depth. The picture is often coated with varnish or some other sealant for protection One of the more famous artists known for his work with decoupage is Henri Matisse. He is  well know for his piece which is entitled Blue Nude II , 1952.
Late in his career, Matisse began to work increasingly with cut paper. He used sheets of paper washed over with gouache colors and then cut out his shapes and stuck them together, as shown below in a collage entitled “The Snail” from 1953.

Henri was a French artist, known for his use of colour and his fluid and original draughtsmanship. He was a draughtsman, printer and sculptor. He was born in Fance, the oldest son of a prosperous grain merchant.

Humanist Type: Centaur

I love this typography, simple yet elegant!

My 1st CD Cover !!

I love Whitney's music, and have always thought of writing a biography on her entire life. She started singing at a very young age, and I wonder if she ever knew how famous she'd become. (I didn't include her death, because I didn't want to make it sad).
Digital designing gave me the opportunity to express my imagination on paper. I used a combination of real & virtual images to come up with my design. Below are the original images used:
A. Whitney Houston (to be used for back cover).

B. Whitney when young.

C. Bubbles of dream?thoughts.

D. Whitney performing on stage.

E. Stage

In the process itself, I set a stage (E) and added Whitney"s young picture (B). I then refined it alittle so it could blend in with the surrounding, but still have the idea of black-and-white

I then added the bubbles (C), but deleted the space in and around, so it blended with the outside, and pasted D (her performance on stage) on the inside so it appears as a dream/thought from B. I also added other pictures of her into the preceding little bubble spaces, bit not so visible, signifying her growth to popularity.Latly, I added the title (The Biography & Greatest Hits of Whitney Houston) and the theme song - Dreams do come true! ( Not real, but made up for the purpose of adding effect to the design).

For the back cover, I added one of her pictures (A) unto a pinkish background and cut off the edges so it will fit in. Then I designed the edges to give it more sparkle,. The saturation was then reduced to make it a little faint so the wordings could be clear/readable. Lastly, I added the wordings.

For the sides, the sentence was written vertically, cut to size & added to the ends of the finished back case. Below is the finished work:

Front cover:

Back Cover:

Sides:

All the above were measured to fit CD before printing and then cut out after printing..........

Designer Achille Mauzan

I enjoy Mauzan's works because he manages to combine comic with ironic truths.
I like the cheerful colors he uses (well, most of the time).

His works usually have a deeper meaning...pictorial symbolism. It draws out the viewer's imagination. This picture above, for instance, could mean alot of different things to different people. It could represent politics, religion, stupidity of vanity etc.

Take a closer look and think a little, What does it mean to you?
